Liverpool’s ‘Crocs’ Are Hungry for More Mattresses: A Sustainability Success Story
In a world where waste management challenges keep many council leaders up at night, Liverpool City Council has found a way to put those worries to bed – quite literally! Our groundbreaking mattress recycling program has just hit an impressive milestone, and we’re just getting started.
A Dream Partnership Coming True
Working with Wollondilly Shire Council over the past six months, our mighty ‘Crocs’ (our affectionately named mattress shredders) have devoured an impressive 765 mattresses. That’s nearly 14 tonnes of waste that won’t be taking a century-long nap in our landfills!
But here’s what’s really keeping us up at night (in a good way):
- 🔄 96% recycling rate achieved
- 💪 9.2 tonnes of steel recovered
- 📦 765 cubic meters of landfill space saved
- 🌱 Moving towards 99% recycling with innovative partnerships
From Waste to Wonder
Our facility isn’t just about destroying old mattresses – it’s about giving them a new life. Through our partnership with ResourceCo, we’re turning mattress materials into eco-friendly fuel. And soon, thanks to our collaboration with Kandui Technologies and UNSW, we’ll be transforming mattress floc into ceramic tiles!
Hey Frank, Got Any Mattresses?
Speaking of partnerships, we couldn’t help but notice Fairfield’s got some mattresses too. Mayor Frank Carbone, our ‘Crocs’ are still hungry! With our facility already proving its worth through the Wollondilly partnership, we’re ready to help Fairfield join the circular economy revolution. After all, what are neighbors for?
As Mayor Ned Mannoun says, “When I close my eyes, I can visualize a future in which Liverpool is recycling mattresses for every single council in greater Sydney.” Well, Fairfield is definitely part of that vision! We could use a bit of extra business at the moment…..How about it Frank Carbone?
Award-Winning Innovation
Our commitment to sustainability isn’t going unnoticed. We’re proud recipients of the Circular Economy Award at the 2024 Keep Australia Beautiful Sustainable Cities Awards, and our ‘Crocs’ were finalists in the Resource Recovery awards category.
The Future is Circular
With Australia facing a king-sized mattress waste problem (1.8 million mattresses discarded annually!), Liverpool is leading the charge in innovative solutions. Our partnership with Wollondilly proves that councils working together can create meaningful change – saving both the environment and ratepayers’ money.
Ready to Join the Revolution?
Whether you’re a resident looking to dispose of an old mattress or a neighboring council interested in our services (looking at you, Fairfield! 😉), our ‘Crocs’ are ready to help create a more sustainable future.
